SOU 1401 is a preserved 4-6-2 steamer.
Background[]
The engine was built in 1926 as part of the Southern's Ps-4 class, which according to many are the most well-designed and "beautiful" steam locomotives in America. The designer for the Ps-4 class, Fairfax Harrison, got the idea for green paint from the United Kingdom's Southern Railway (no relationship), so, 1401 was painted green.
The engine is currently an attraction at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. as a possible permanent exhibit. For years people have tried to get the engine up and running again, but every time the Smithsonian turns it down and refuses to let 1401 out. But the engine is in excellent condition, so many believe it could run again.
