ATSF #1316 is a scrapped and sunken 4-6-2 steamer.

History[]

1316 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in December 1911 for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company to Haul Express Passenger Trains.

Accident (1953-1996)[]

In December 1953, It worked for the Santa Fe but the bridge failed from the weight, causing 1316, the tender, and first passenger car to fall into the river. No one was inside the first passenger car when it derailed and trapped in the sinking cab of the engine, drowned. Many of the passengers aboard the train did not even realize of the incident until they were evacuated from the unsafe bridge.

Scrapping of 1316 (1998)[]

By the end of 1997 to the beginning of 1998, 1316 were partially revealed submerged in sand just east of the renewed bridge during low tides, and Santa Fe workers salvaged what parts they could from them. Occasional sightings of 1316 have continued to come up over the years, but no serious recovery operation has ever been put forward due to lack of feasible justification. 1316 was retired from service in the early November 1998 after got sunk in the water. In Saturday morning of November 21st, 1998, Santa Fe rescues 1316 from the water and put on a scrapyard. The scrapping of 1316 process begins and on November 24, 1998, the scrapping process stopped. Later, Santa Fe 1316 remained and trucked out of the yard as of December 19, 1998.
